Thousands are backing major change to the State Pension age

The petition, created by Michelle Gill, says reducing the pension age could help people retire with dignity and avoid financial hardship.

Under current rules, the State Pension age is 66, but it is now rising to 67 in stages between 2026 and 2028.

The petition is calling for the Government to reverse this direction and set the State Pension age at 65 for everyone.

It argues that some people aged between 65 and 67 face health problems, caring responsibilities and limited opportunities to remain in work.

The petition states: “Reduce the state pension age to 65. We believe this could mean people can retire with dignity and avoid hardship. We also think it could free up jobs for younger workers entering the labour market.”

It adds: “Many aged 65–67 face poor health, caring pressures, and limited work options, which we think is unfair.”

What is the State Pension age now?

The State Pension age is the earliest age at which someone can start receiving their State Pension.

It is currently 66 for men and women, but is increasing to 67 between April 2026 and April 2028.

The current legislation also provides for a further increase from 67 to 68 between 2044 and 2046.

A government review in 2023 confirmed the rise from 66 to 67 would go ahead, while a further review is due to consider the longer-term State Pension age.

What happens if the petition gets more signatures?

The petition will remain open until March 16, 2027, it can still be signed here.

If the petition reaches 10,000 signatures, the Government is required to respond.

If it reaches 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament.

However, reaching either threshold does not mean the proposed change automatically becomes law.
