ALMOST 40 players took part in the Hyman Morris Trophy for the Yorkshire Ladies' Merit title at a warm Lund Park and some excellent bowling was seen on tricky greens.

Sadly there were only a few locals that entered and Faye Ellis, of Craven, performed the best of them by reaching the quarter-finals.

The deserving winner was Helen Gilroy, of Rufford Park, Leeds who comfortably defeated her county colleague, Alexis Lunn Gadd, of Wakefield, 21-13.

There was more joy for the Rufford Park club as Danny Teale won the John Rycroft Trophy, run by the Aire-Wharfe League at Broughton Road after beating Garry Whelan, of Guiseley, 21-14.

Andy Tate, of Sutton, reached the semi-finals.

Veteran Trevor Hargreaves reached the Halifax Merit Final at Elland WMC and, after a narrow semi-final win in the hot conditions, the exhausted Cross Roads ace was no match for Danny Radcliffe, of Hove Edge, going down 4-21.

The last four clubs in the Skipton team KO event for the Clarkson Cup are favourites Sutton A, Colne Legion A, Rolls Royce A and Whinfield A.

Sutton easily defeated SPF B despite a good win for the losers in John Cobb. Semis are on July 17.

In the Supplementary event, the last four are Cononley A, who easily accounted for Sutton B, Craven A, Whinfield B and Colne Cricket, who defeated Crosshills A, despite wins by David Scott and Phil Hudson for the losers. Semis also on July 17.

The Skipton Veterans Inter-District team lost narrowly to Halifax in the recent fixture going down 27-29.

Both legs were played on fast greens in extremely hot conditions.

The team won the home leg at Gargrave where the winners were shared with Brian Gore, Len Buxton, John Parkin and Warren Burnett producing the goods but away at Sowerby T and BC, only Alistair Keighley and Mick Demain could register wins despite some close games.

Next game is the one-day KO event for the Hickson Trophy where the locals meet Bradford again at Garforth Rec on July 13.

Action continues this weekend with the Yorkshire Parks Brotherton and Wood Cup Finals in the Heavy Woollen area on Sunday from 10am.

Cross Roads meet Spen Victoria in their first match at Overthorpe Sports.

At the same time, the Worth Valley hold their Valley and Summer Handicaps at Cross Roads.

The Phillip Wright Memorial Pairs are also on Sunday at Alkincotes Park Colne where the holders, Daryll Wright and Silsden’s David Scott defend their title from 9.30am.
