JASON Jennings, of Sutton, was the worthy winner of the Skipton League’s Dick Keighley Memorial Trophy, held in memory of a former league secretary, when he comfortably beat the reigning British Veterans Champion, David Hemsley, of Oxenhope, 21-10 at Gargrave BC.

This event is held for players outside the top flight but play on a rather miserable day lit up the venue.

When the sun did come out, Jennings' ability improved from game to game and he was a worthy winner. Losing semi-finalists were Anthony Emmett and Dennis Wynne Jones.

The only problem Jennings has is that as Sutton were promoted to the top flight this year, he will be ineligible to defend it next year, unless he plays for the C team.

Barry Turnbull won the Yorkshire Veteran’s Merit a few weeks ago at Asa Briggs, but just failed to make it a double when he teamed up with Dave Leather to reach the Veteran’s Pairs Final at the same venue, only to lose 7-21 to Tony Riley and Paul Gill. Losing in one of the semis were Trevor Hargreaves and David Hemsley.

Cross Roads A finished up as runners-up in the Halifax Division One behind the top side, Elland WMC A, while the local B team won the Third Division with ease and return to League Two. Denholme finished in mid-table.

Sutton have reached the final of the Aire-Wharfe’s Jennings Crackles Trophy after thrashing poor Myrtle Park B and now meet the present league leaders, the Black Swan A team at the end of September.

Steve Griffiths, of Denholme, reached the semi-finals of the Hebden Bridge Champion of Champions event at Hillcrest before losing to the eventual winner, Richard Helliwell, of Old Town.

Early leaders in all three divisions in the Skipton Floodlit League are Colne Cricket, Colne Legion A and Lund Park.

Preliminaries in the Norman Johnston Floodlit Handicap were played last night at SPF with the finals scheduled for September 19.
