Northallerton Town 1

Steeton 2

STEETON'S first-ever FA Vase tie ended with triumph in this second qualifying round clash.

Chevrons' defender Stevie Pearson had the first effort of the game. Toby Jeffrey swung in a delicious free-kick which met the head of the centre-half, who glanced his header wide of the goal.

The hosts came forward not long after, but the striker's effort was blazed over as the Northallerton support tried to spur their team on.

On 14 minutes, they also had a chance akin to Pearson's minutes earlier, heading wide as the game remained scoreless.

Steeton were not to be denied only two minutes later. Ben Clarkson was released down the right from midfield, his ball in took a bounce before James Grogan brought it down on his chest before his left-foot volley left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

One became two shortly after. Tim Hird's ball was kept alive by Jeffrey, who hooked the ball into the area where Clarkson met the ball and headed it into the corner.

The hosts woke up from the quickfire double, they came forward again and it was Grogan with a vital block before Tom Leach did the same minutes after to preserve the two-goal lead.

Steeton keeper Alfie Stevens-Neale was called into action for the first time. He attempted to catch a cross but the ball squirmed out before he made a brilliant recovery save.

The hosts pulled one back. The ball was given away in midfield before the Richard Walker raced away and slotted the ball under Stevens-Neale.

However, Stevens-Neale spectacularly denied an equaliser, a long range effort was destined for the top corner before a magnificent intervention.

The second-half started without much incident as Steeton remained watertight as the game was tight as the hosts sensed an equaliser.

Stevens-Neale made another save on the hour before Northallerton had an optimistic penalty claim waved away, Steeton didn't have many chances yet Ben Richardson and Tim Hird continued their stellar work in midfield, supporting the link between defence and attack.

An equaliser was almost forthcoming. Leach, who had a fantastic game, nicked the ball away from the onrushing player and was just tall enough to head away.

Steeton's first real chance in the second-half came 18 minutes from time. Andy Briggs had two half-chances as he looked to put the game beyond doubt but failed to convert either.

Maney then put a delightful ball across the home goal and somehow the home defender managed to hook the ball over his own crossbar with Clarkson waiting for a tap in.

The game continued to pass without incident and the closest the hosts came to an equaliser was with three minutes to go as a dipping effort cleared the crossbar.

That proved to be the final chance as Steeton held on for a huge victory and march on to the next round.
