SILSDEN Ladies have retained the Yorkshire Parks Ladies Division One title with some ease after the last game.

They defeated Moldgreen 8-2 away, while nearest challengers, Linthwaite C and BC A were thrashed 1-9 at home against Hove Edge.

The team have done well this season as they were not always at full strength but now go on to the Yorkshire Ladies Top Team event at Heckmondwike on October 14.

There was some excellent bowling by all the eight competitors in the Norman Johnston Floodlit Handicap finals at Addingham, which rounded off the Skipton season.

The deserved winner was Peter Clark, of Devon, who just held on to beat David Scott, of Crosshills, 21-17.

Both were probably the best on view on a cold damp night. Losing in the semi-finals were David Precious and David Leeming, while also in the money were Mark Adams, David Jacques, Sharon Gadd and holder Neill Hargreaves. Former league president Roy Sanderson was on hand to present the prizes.

Hargreaves teamed up with his brother Richard two nights later as they attempted to win the Hebden Bridge Old Town pairs yet again but, after a good start, they lost 18-21 in the final to Ben Stapleton and Darren Smith, of Rochdale, on a soggy surface.

The playing surface at Keighley BC was far from perfect as well as the Worth Valley End of Season Doubles were completed last Sunday.

The winners of the main event were Kevin Mackie and William Bestwick, of Sutton, who narrowly defeated Paul McHale of the home club and league secretary Mick Demain 15-13.

Losing in the semis were Bev Guffick and Mick Paton and holders David Leeming and Graeme Ralph. In the Supplementary event, the winners were Stephen Lloyd and John Callanan, who comfortably beat Kevin Burnett and Mick Cox 15-8.

Losing in the semis were Sean Kirby and Stephen Pickles and Len Buxton Junior and Senior.

Bowling continues next week as the Skipton Floodlit League is played until October.

Saturday sees the Aire-Wharfe Jennings-Crackles Cup Final at Idle between Sutton and League winners Black Swan A, of Harrogate, at 2pm.

The Worth Valley League Cup Finals are on the same day at Broughton Road and commence at 11am, with the Chairman’s Cup between Craven and Bingley B. That is followed at 1pm with the Supplementary Final between Steeton B and Bradshaw B and the main event for the Valley Cup between Steeton A and Cross Roads A at around 3pm.

Next Monday sees the Veteran Cup Finals for all five leagues at Lund Park. The semis were played last Monday.

More sad news for all players is the death of the popular Pam Potts, of Oxenhope and Haworth. She enjoyed playing the game at all levels, especially with her late husband Brian at home and abroad, but since his death some years ago, she has played little. Condolences go to all her family.
