CRAVEN athletes had another fantastic day on the fells overlooking Settle.

They won five titles in the 11th National Championships hosted by Giggleswick School.

There was also a home win with Euan Brennan taking gold in the senior boys race where team-mate Tom Humphries was third.

Ermysted’s had Tom Barrett in sixth place.

Emily Jones was fifth in the senior girls race while Eve Hutchinson of Giggleswick was 10th.

Craven's first champion of the day was Upper Wharfedale School’s Jacob Reeday in the Year 7 boys race.

Lachlan Wills and Sam Bentham of Ermysted’s finished just outside of the top ten.

Skipton Girls High School runners Hannah Robinson eighth and Megan Wilkinson ninth were followed to the line in the girls race by South Craven’s Olivier Aldham who was tenth.

The Year 8 & 9 runners were next and were led home by Keighley & Craven runner Sam Conroy representing Beckfoot School.

His clubmate Sam Headley from Upper Wharfedale School was an impressive fourth.

In the girls event, Skipton Girls High School pupil Emma Peel was Craven’s best in 10th place.

The Y10/11 race saw Craven win both the boys and girls individual races.

South Craven’s Sam Smith added to his recent title at the Junior Great North Run as he became English National Champion and Skipton Girls High School athlete Alice Jones took the honours in the girls race.

Ermysted’s had a good showing in the team event unluckily coming runners-up just two points off a national title as Louis Hudson sixth, Harvey Lewis ninth, Sebastian Seggar-Stavely 10th, Alex Thompson 11th and Arthur Peel 14th were all highly placed.

All of the races followed the same format with the start in the flat school field before they went round some tough cross-country, with a stream crossing and finally a steep hill, where suddenly everyone knew the difference between a fell race and other cross-country races.

Even the leaders were brought to little more than walking pace as they strained manfully to get to the top on a warm day for racing.
