Farsley Celtic were pushed all the way by second from bottom Matlock Town at Throstle Nest but the home side won 3-2 to bank another three points in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division.

The Celts had to come from a goal down after Marcus Marshall headed home a 13th-minute corner to put the Gladiators in front.

But Jimmy Spencer bagged a brace with two goals in as many minutes late in the first half.

Spencer headed a 38th-minute corner past Matlock keeper Ross Durrant and added a second soon after when he lashed a shot in after the ball had dropped to him in the area.

Celts keeper Kyle Trenerry was caught out midway through the first half when he failed to clear and was robbed by Marshall who then stroked the ball into the open net.

The home side bagged what was to be the winner three minutes later from another set-piece which centre back Jack Higgins was sent up for. The corner was flicked on and Higgins tapped in at the far post.

The win lifted Farsley just one place to 12th in the table and they are now one of three clubs on 13 points, but they have games in hand on the other two.

There were no points to play for as Brighouse Town travelled to Glossop North End for an FA Trophy extra preliminary round tie.

Vill Powell’s men booked themselves a place in the next round of the competition with a 2-0 win at Surrey Street, which has not always been a happy hunting ground for Town.

After a goalless first half Town took the tie with two goals in a seven-minute spell as Aaron Martin chased a ball down and slotted under the home keeper and Gabby Johnson controlled a through ball before lashing in the second.

Brighouse’s dubious reward is a trip to Morpeth Town, who are Evo-Stik Division One North rivals – and also leaders – in the preliminary round on October 13.
