JOHN Kear is under Bulls orders to miss the start of pre-season.

The head coach will not be at Tong when some of the full-time players return to training on Monday.

Kear has embarked on a fortnight’s holiday – at the command of chairman Andrew Chalmers.

The New Zealander wants to ensure that his workaholic coach has time to recharge the batteries having just finished steering Wales to the 2021 World Cup.

Kear said: “Our owner’s told me to get away for two weeks so I can get my head right. But I’m ready to put my feet up.

“The last month I had when I didn’t coach a game of rugby league was November 2013. I’ve coached at least one every month since then.

“You’ve got to have family time and recreation time. It benefits you.

“It gives you an edge and a freshness when you do come back.

“Being in and among the group again energises you. I’ll be really looking forward to that when we’ve had this little break.”

The full-time members of the squad, minus those who have been playing internationally, come back first. The part-timers are due to return the following day.

Kear added: “We’ve obviously planned and prepared with both Leigh Beattie and Mark Dunning and Adam (Simpson), the strength and conditioning coach, so they’ll get a tough early start.

“Then obviously when I get back, we’ll be looking at things like the structures and the organisation. Pre-season is all in different phases.

“Me being off is an irrelevance really because it’s planned out, in all honesty, right the way through to the Boxing Day game (against York).”
