Ventus Yeadon u18s 3

Steeton u18s 1

STEETON'S young guns fell to their second defeat in the league this season on a horrible day for playing football at Ventus Yeadon.

With very strong winds and a rutted football pitch up near Leeds-Bradford Airport it was never going to be a pretty game of football. It was a case who was prepared to grind out the ugly result.

Well, as it proved, Ventus were the ones to grind it out.

In the first half Steeton actually played pretty well with dealing with the long balls assisted by the wind making it difficult to judge with the ball moving all over the place.

They looked solid and broke dangerously at times and just needed that level head in the final third to finish the move off, but to no avail.

Ventus created very little and Elliot Wilson, in nets for Steeton, only had to deal with a free-kick that he touched around the post with a flying save and no more than dealing with inswinging corners aided by the wind that looked dangerous.

Second half, Steeton were the first to get off the mark. It started with a clearance from the Steeton defender, which was picked up by Ventus in midfield he rolled the ball back to his keeper, whose clearance fell to Harry Farnell. He made no mistake taking Steeton into a 1-0 lead.

Ventus levelled from the spot shortly after when they gave the ball away again, Ventus broke into the box and a rash challenge from Steeton defender brought the Ventus striker to the floor and made it 1-1 when he thrashed the ball home from 12 yards.

Ventus made it 2-1 when a corner was somehow not cleared by Steeton on several occasions and the Ventus player thankfully accepted the invitation to tuck the ball into the corner of the net.

Number three for Ventus followed when a long punt up the park was not dealt with by the Steeton defence and the striker tucked the ball away, taking the three points for the home side.

Pretty football will not win you games all the time at grassroots football you have to learn to win ugly, so hopefully Steeton have learned their lesson.
