KEIGHLEY were frustrated by the weather for the second time in two weeks at home to Carlton over the weekend.

Only 13 overs were bowled before their Bradford League Division One match was abandoned, with Carlton on 55-2, because of persistent rain.

They entertain local rivals Baildon at Lawkholme this coming weekend.

But Keighley's seconds recorded their first win of the season.

They made the long journey to Carlton, with home skipper Danny Sampson winning the toss and electing to bat first to take advantage of a wicket that normally produces plenty of runs.

He did not though take into account Keighley’s extremely young spin attack of Louie Wilkinson, Mohammed Abbas and Mohammed Ahmed though.

All three spinners are under 18, a product of Keighley’s excellent junior section, and they were all able to find turn and spin, which took the Carlton batting line up by surprise.

Wickets fell at regular intervals and despite a rear guard action from Gareth Rawlinson (45 off just 31 deliveries), Carlton crumbled to just 122 all out in 31 overs.

Despite several rain breaks, the Lawkholme Laners sensed victory was at hand and to get the game finished, they attacked the Carlton bowling line up with some positive shot selections despite the risk of losing wickets.

This strategy proved to be the match winner and led by Adam Qurban (39 not out), Keighley got over the line in just the 21st over for the loss of seven wickets.

Skipper Allan Birkett heaped much praise upon his young side, especially his spin attack, and said he looked forward to building on this result away at Baildon this weekend.
