KEIGHLEY Cougars have announced that Robert Matamosi has signed a new contract with the club.

The Fijian-born winger has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal that will keep him at Cougar Park for the 2022 season.

And after a stop-start first year in Keighley, he insists he is now looking forward to another bite of the cherry next year.

“I am very grateful to (Cougars head coach) Rhys Lovegrove and the club for the opportunity and for signing me back for next season,” admitted Matamosi.

“I didn’t get to play lots of games last season due to injuries and my work in the armed services but I’m looking forward to getting another crack this year.

“Hopefully I can help the club get that promotion now at the end of the season.”

Playing rugby union growing up in his native Fiji, Matamosi had never played a game of rugby league until experiencing the sport for the first time in 2016 after relocating to the United Kingdom to join the British Army as a logistics engineer.

He took to the 13-a-side code like a duck to water and a string of impressive performances in the Army side caught the eye of the West Wales Raiders, who signed the winger to a deal for the 2019 season.

Despite the struggles of West Wales on the field, Matamosi continued to impress and went viral on social media with a breath-taking 80 metre effort in a defeat at Doncaster early in 2020 before the season was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This became a catalyst for clubs racing to capture his services for the 2021 season, with the Cougars beating off interest from Championship clubs to secure the Fijian’s signature.

Arriving at Cougar Park ahead of this season, a combination of a knee injury and his work away from the game with the armed services limited his game time.

However, the winger did score another eye-catching try for the Army in this year’s armed forces championship.
