Steeton may have suffered a dearth of league action in recent months but they are still taking steps to make progress on and off the pitch.

Having only played two league matches since November, they suffered another postponement at home to Lower Hopton last Saturday as football across the district was once again wiped out by the cold snap.

But the Chevrons have been buoyed by the signing of utility player Matty Kershaw from Silsden.

Boss Roy Mason said: “Matty is a young, versatile player who will add a bit of pace to the side and offer us something a bit different. I’m delighted to have him on board.”

Steeton have had a mixed season to date, with injuries to key players not helping.

Mason said: “We have been without Lee Reilly and Graham Holmes – our front two for the past two campaigns – for the majority of the season and we lost both our full backs in Michael Rhodes and John Robertson with ankle injuries at the end of September. Both these players have only just resumed training.”

Meanwhile off the pitch, Steeton are launching a monthly draw to try to claw back some of the £15,000 they spent on upgrading their changing facilities during the close season.

The club had hoped to gain grants towards some of the cost of the work but that would have meant virtually demolishing the clubhouse and starting from scratch.

Steeton treasurer Mick Ferguson said: “We could not embark on such a project as the amount of money to match the grant funding was outside our limits and would have taken years to achieve.”

Instead, the club dug into their reserves and now need to replenish those funds.

To do this, they will be running a monthly draw, costing £5 per entry, with no limit to the number of units that can be bought. Prize money will be half of the draw receipts.

The prize will be drawn on the second Tuesday of every month, with winners notified by email, on the club’s website and in The Old Star, Steeton.

If the club gets 100 entries per month, prize money will equate to £250. The first draw is planned for March 13.

Steeton hope to be back in action on Saturday when they are due to entertain Tyersal (2.30pm).
