Keighley teenager Danish Muhammad ended an unbeaten record in emphatic style to reach the semi-finals of the Royal Navy ABA Schools Championships.

The 13-year-old stormed to victory over Birtley Boxing Club’s Jack-Lewis Dickinson, who had won all 17 of his previous fights, by an 18-2 margin.

He is now just two bouts from being crowned national champion in the 42-44kg class two category, having won the class one 40-42kg title last year.

Danish, who is trained by Amir Khan’s former coach Mike Jelley at Bury Amateur Boxing Club, was expecting a tough encounter at the Manchester Boxing Centre of Excell-ence in Gorton.

But although the first round proved a struggle for both boxers, ending just 1-1, the South Craven School pupil found his range to dominate the contest. He won the second round 7-1 and the third 10-0.

Jelley, who felt Dickinson was guilty of spoiling tactics, said: “The first round was horrible to watch but then Danish started to box, keep his opponent at some distance and give himself some room.

“He did really well in what was an electrifying atmosphere. Fingers cross-ed, he can now win his semi-final.”

Danish said he was really thankful to the large contingent of supporters who made the trip across the Pennines to support him. He is hoping for similar backing for his last-four clash at the same venue against Rotunda Boxing Club’s Daniel Stringer this weekend.

Meanwhile, his 12-year-old cousin Ibrahim Nadim was beaten in his national quarter-final, losing 21-20 to Birtley’s Joe McKenzie in a 32-34kg class one bout.

McKenzie was 11-7 up after the first round and 16-10 up following the second before Ibrahim fought back to win the final round 10-5, only to be pipped by just one point.
