Airedale Hockey Club’s Matthew Ramshaw has been selected for an England under-15 training camp at the age of just 12.
Matthew (pictured) competed with 70 boys from the north of England at the under-15 regional performance centre and was one of 16 picked for the get-together at the end of this month.
The residential high performance assessment camp at Tonbridge School in Kent will be run by the England under-16 coaching team.
“This is an outstanding achievement,” said Richard Stewart, who is coach at the Oakbank School-based club.
“We knew he was good but I didn’t expect this much so soon.”
Matthew will not be allowed to play for England under-16s yet due to his age but he will effectively have three seasons to push for a place.
He celebrated his call-up by helping Airedale under-14 boys to three victories in their first matches of the season.
Wins over Slaz-engers (2-1), Bradford (3-0) and Pocklington (2-0) saw the team rise to the top of the Yorkshire Youth League in its first year in the competition. Matthew scored twice, with Max Lockyer (4) and Edward Washington also on target.
Airedale men’s first team also recorded their second win of the season against Sheffield, putting them near the top of Yorkshire Division Three.
Tobias Neale (2) and Tony Lind got the goals in a 3-0 victory.
