Keighley 28 Hunslet Old Boys 20

Keighley set up a Yorkshire Cup third-round trip to Skirlaugh thanks to victory over Hunslet, who are a division higher than them.

The visitors had a big pack that was hard to tackle and they got off to a flying start when Keighley’s full back missed a high bomb. Hunslet pounced on it with a long pass out to the winger that saw them go in at the corner.

Then a good hand-off saw prop Jamie Fields go over the whitewash and he converted his own try to put Old Boys 10-0 in front.

Keighley came into the game with some good tackling by Chris Spencer, Shaun Metcalfe and Josh Lynam. Forwards Danny Snowden, Mathew Mount and Steve Wrench also made hard yards.

The hosts got on the scoresheet after 20 minutes when a short pass from hooker Danny Barrett put Stokes into a gap and he scored under the posts, Kris Gott adding the two points.

Hunslet started ripping the ball out and trying to make the decisions for the referee, who was having none of it.

Keighley scrum half Ricky Leatham was creating all sorts of problems with his jinking runs.

Hunslet looked like they were going to score again out wide after their player bounced off a couple of tacklers and had the line in his sights, but a crunching tackle by Rick Barr put paid to that.

Barr was in the thick of it again a couple of minutes later after a pass by Stokes put him through a gap.

He made 50 yards before drawing the defence and passing out to Gott for him to score out wide and level the score at 10-10.

Gott just missed out on a try minutes later after a high kick into the corner saw him out-jump everyone but he could not keep hold of the ball.

But it wasn’t long before he got over for his second try after a long pass out wide saw him beat two defenders to score in the corner.

Keighley extended their lead on the stroke of half-time when Gott went over for his third try and added the conversion to give Keighley a 20-10 lead at half-time.

The second half saw Hunslet get off to a flyer as they did in the first half with a good try out wide.

Keighley again started sluggishly and let Hunslet in again to level the score at 20-20 with a converted try.

The second half was a stop-start affair, with Hunslet guilty of some high tackles. Even when the decision went for them, there was still back-chat to the referee.

The score was deadlocked until the last 15 minutes when the referee finally had enough and gave a Hunslet player a yellow card for a high tackle.

Keighley went for the two points but it just went wide of the posts.

However, they went ahead shortly afterwards.

A powerful run by prop Snowden saw him make 40 yards before he was brought down a metre from the try line but quick ball saw hooker Barrett dive over to put Keighley in front.

Gott added the extras to make it 26-20 with ten minutes to go.

Hunslet went close to scoring themselves but were thwarted again by a try-saving tackle from Barr as Keighley refused to budge an inch. Price and Jamie Stephenson imp-ressed in making hard yards, with Owen Palmer, who was playing his first game for Keighley, never taking a backward step.

Subs Mark Smith and Quinton Sneyd drove the ball to within 20 yards of the Hunslet line when another high tackle saw another yellow card for an Old Boy.

Man of the match Gott put the ball between the uprights to seal an impressive victory.

Keighley are back in league action on Saturday at home to Ossett Trinity.
