KEIGHLEY Trades Union Council is writing to express our appreciation for mayor Tracy Brabin’s efforts in securing funding for cheap bus fares in West Yorkshire. Her work has had a significant impact on the lives of many people in Keighley, particularly those who rely on public transportation.

The availability of affordable bus fares has made it easier for people to access essential services such as healthcare, education and employment. It has also contributed to a reduction in traffic congestion and air pollution, making our communities cleaner and more sustainable.

In 2017 the Bus Services Act gave local authorities the power to introduce franchising. Andy Burnham of Greater Manchester has introduced this model after fighting off a legal challenge with a High Court victory in March 2022. The groundwork has been laid for Tracy Brabin who we hope will both seize the reins of Burnham’s success and learn from any mistakes that may have been made.

With the abandonment of HS2 it is more obvious than ever that the “levelling-up” of the north has in fact been a “levelling-down”. While London enjoys a joined up transport service consisting of both buses and trains, under public control, the north continues to be stuck in the stone age of a non-integrated transport system. As the south advances so the north falls further behind.

It is imperative that West Yorkshire transport, starting with buses, be taken back under public control so that local people can enjoy the services that their communities deserve – affordable, regular and reliable. Will it be easy? No. Will mistakes be made? Yes. Will it be worth it for local communities in the long run? We believe so.

Tracy Brabin’s commitment to improving public transportation in our region is commendable. Her leadership and dedication have not gone unnoticed, and we hope that she will continue to advocate for policies that benefit the people she represents.

Thank you again for your hard work and dedication, Tracy Brabin.
