ENGLISH poet Les Barker begins the year at Lothersdale Live with a headline performance on Saturday. (January 17)

Laughter will be in store for anyone who goes along to Lothersdale Village Hall for the latest in the series of folk, roots and acoustic nights.

Les, born in 1947 in Manchester, is best known for his comedic poetry and parodies of popular songs, although he has also produced serious and thought-provoking written work.

The former accountant initially toured folk music venues as a solo performer, then later with The Mrs Ackroyd Band, named after his mongrel dog Mrs Ackroyd.

According to Wikipedia, Les went on to perform in Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada, release 20 albums and publish 77 books.

For his comic monologues Les has created several recurring characters and themes including Jason and the Arguments, Cosmo the Fairly Accurate Knife Thrower, Captain Indecisive, The Far off Land of Dyslexia and Spot of the Antarctic.

Both his funny and more serious songs have become standards for other acts such as Waterson: Carthy and June Tabor.

Doors open for the Lothersdale concert at 7.30pm, with support duo Farrago due to begin the music at 8.15pm.

Tickets cost £12 on the door, £10 in advance by visiting lothersdalelive.org.uk or emailing admin@lothersdalelive.org.uk.
