Old and young will unite at Keighley’s war memorial tomorrow afternoon to launch this year’s Poppy Appeal.

The event – which begins at 4pm – takes place on the same day as the funeral of former South Craven School pupil Sgt Gareth Thursby, who was killed in Afghanistan.

Poppy appeal organiser Tommy Thompson said members of the Royal British Legion would be attending the funeral. He said they will be joined by a Second World War veteran and a soldier who has recently been serving in Afghanistan.

Dennis Bailey, 93, will be accompanied by private Luke Davison, who has been on tour with the 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.

Mr Thompson, a former Duke of Wellington’s Regiment soldier, said wreaths and poppy boxes were ready for collection and people could pick them up by calling 07882 458849.

He said: “This appeal is always a big operation, so we could always do with a few more volunteers. They’ll be very much appreciated.

“Anyone willing to come forward can get in touch with me.”

A service for Sgt Thursby is taking place at Holy Trinity Church, Skipton, at noon tomorrow. The cortege will leave Howcrofts funeral directors on Duckett Street at 11.50am and make its way along Sackville Street, Keighley Road, Caroline Square and High Street.
