A Keighley district councillor has been arrested in connection with a street brawl in the town.
Councillor Abid Hussain, a Labour representative for Keighley Central ward, was among six men held at the weekend following the torching of a car in Devonshire Street, where he lives and where a brawl broke out on Wednesday, August 8.
The 53-year-old councillor was detained on suspicion of violent disorder on August 8, then released on police bail. Three other Keighley men aged 18, 19 and 34 were arrested in connection with the same matter.
Two others – aged 27 and 30 – were arrested for alleged violent disorder on the same date and on suspicion of arson relating to two car fires in the early hours of last Saturday. A BMW 5 series car was set on fire and severely damaged in Devonshire Street at 1am, and three hours later a BMW X5 was ablaze in Malsis Road.
Crew commander David Knox, of Keighley Fire Station, said most of the damage was done to the vehicles’ engine compartments. He said both BMWs had been parked outside their owners’ homes.
Commenting on the arson, Detective Inspector Mark Long said: “Clearly this sort of dangerous behaviour is utterly unacceptable and I would ask anyone who has information to contact Airedale and North Bradford CID on the 101 number.”
Coun Hussain’s son Majid Hussain, 28, is due to make his next appearance at Bradford Crown Court on Monday to face charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing an imitation firearm in relation to the events of August 8.
Coun Hussain was elected to represent Keighley Central in May 2010. He declined to comment on his arrest when contacted by the Keighley News.
