Plans have been unveiled to build up to 130 homes on a Keighley green-field site.

An outline application, for the site at High Shann, is due to be submitted to Bradford planners before the end of the year.

But already the proposed scheme has met with opposition from residents, who fear the area’s infrastructure would not be able to cope.

Yesterday afternoon consultancy firm Arup staged a public event in Keighley Civic Centre to display the Chatsworth Settlement Trustees’ plans.

The firm had previously posted a letter about the event and a site plan to residents living near the sloping, open site, which is to the east of Shann Lane and north of Westway and Broadlands.

One resident, civil engineer Nasar Zarif, said he would consider moving away if the development went ahead.

Mr Zarif, 33, of The Chase, said roads, drainage, public transport and local amenities could not cope with an influx of hundreds of new residents and cars.

He said the town currently had many affordable houses which were empty and argued these properties should be renovated and brought back into use before new homes were built.

He said: “This development will increase traffic, especially at peak times, and on Broadlands and other roads there are already cars parked on both sides of the road. It will put kids in danger.

“The drainage on that site isn’t good enough now, so how would it manage with houses?”

Keighley Central ward councillor, Khadim Hussain, said: “It’s early stages and this will have to go through the planning process. But people have been raising concerns with me, and as a ward councillor I’ll be taking those up.

“They’ve mentioned problems with flooding and sewage. There are also big issues surrounding the number of school places in Keighley, and people are struggling to get their first choice.”

An Arup spokesman said the firm was exploring the possibility of building 100 to 130 houses, but stressed the figures had not been finalised.

In the notification letter to residents, Arup associate Nicole Harrison said: “The Chatsworth Settlement Trustees propose to bring forward housing development on a 4.8 hectare site allocated for this use by the council at High Shann, Keighley, off Shann Lane.

“We will consider all comments and feedback, which will help us refine and improve our proposals. We plan to submit an outline planning application to Bradford District Council in late 2012.”
