A new version of a revolutionary wheeled walking frame that has helped countless children over the years to take their first steps has been produced in Keighley.

The David Hart Clinic, based in Dawson Road, has been designing and manufacturing life-changing frames for children with disabilities since the mid-1980s.

Young people in the UK and overseas have taken their first tentative steps thanks to the innovation.

Now the company, Hart Walker UK Ltd, has devised a new, more robust version – the All Terrain Hart Walker.

“The existing walker has been around a long time and there is a high level of customer satisfaction, but it is designed for smaller children, and as they get older, they outgrow it,” said James Garwatuk, a director of the firm, which is owned by his wife Rachael.

“We had parents asking if we could make a bigger version.

“The resultant walker is reinforced, has wider wheels and a stronger suspension, and will absorb more bumps. It also looks more modern, with a new colour scheme. It has been trialled and the feedback has been very positive.”

He said each child is assessed first to determine if a walker is appropriate for them, and they then have a free trial period.

Assessments can be carried out at the clinic or the team will travel to other parts of the country.

“The vast majority of children do proceed, but for some it may not be the right time,” added Mr Garwatuk.

“Each walker is hand built – they are not mass produced. This year, so far, we have probably made between 60 and 70.

“There is interest from across the world. We sell them abroad in kit form but make adjustments for each child.”

Mr Garwatuk said the work performed at the clinic was hugely rewarding.

“When you see parents in tears as their child walks for the first time it makes you realise the value of what you’re doing,” he added.
