Keighley parents are being urged to act now to ensure their child’s journey back to school next month is as safe as possible

West Yorkshire Safer Roads Delivery Group says children who walk to school should be reminded to use suitable crossing points, be alert and avoid distractions, such as mobile phones or headphones.

For youngsters who cycle to school, their bikes should be checked and helmets and high-visibility jackets worn.

The group recommends children cycling to school for the first time should be familiarised with the route, and its junctions, in advance.

Parents taking their children to school by car are asked to keep clear of zig-zag road markings near school entrances and park considerately.

Sue Snoddy, Bradford Council’s casualty reduction and road safety partnership manager, said: “Going back to school or starting school for the first time is a big event for children, and we need to ensure the journey is as safe as possible.

“Taking a few extra precautions can help prevent accidents.”
