Keighley Show organisers are finalising plans for this year’s entertainment extravaganza.

And they are hoping for a bumper event after the 2012 show – which would have been the 55th – was cancelled.

One of the wettest summers for years left the Marley playing fields venue saturated.

This year the show, on September 7, features more than 500 classes.

Traditional agriculture-themed sections include tractors, cattle, sheep, pygmy goats and horses, plus show jumping.

But there is a huge range of other classes, from horticulture and handicrafts to ferrets.

Show president this year is Jean Harker, a stalwart of the event whose family is also strongly linked.

Her late husband, Edgar, a farmer, was a former president and served as show manager for many years.

Mrs Harker succeeded her mother-in-law as secretary of the handicraft and domestic (produce) section in 1970, and held the post until 2009, when her youngest daughter Karen Walbank took over!

“I am highly delighted to be the 2013 president – it was an honour to be asked,” said Mrs Harker, who was made an honorary life member of the show society in 1992.

“I’m very much looking forward to the show and hoping for a successful day following the huge disappointment of last year’s cancellation.”

This year’s handicraft and domestic class includes photography. Entrants are invited to submit a photo, up to seven by five inches, in one of three categories – reflection, celebration and wildlife. Entry is 40p and all photographs will be displayed in the handicrafts marquee.

The section will also include a variety of arts, crafts, baking and preserves.

“It offers a stage for exhibitors to share their hobby with a wider audience than just family and friends,” said a show spokesman.

“The colourful and attractive array of handiwork is admired by the many visitors that look round the marquee.

“There is also a children’s section, which provides an opportunity for those up to and including the age of 15 to showcase their talent, and we would love to encourage more young people to get involved.”
