One of the many personalities who formed the backbone of amateur dramatics in Keighley for decades, this was John W Pickles, who died aged 74 in 1958.
Here he appears as Andor the innkeeper, in the Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society production of Gipsy Love in 1925.
Specialising in character roles, John Pickles had acted with the Keighley Amateurs since its early years, playing Antonio in The Gondoliers in 1908.
He played Squire Western in Tom Jones twice, in 1910 and 1920, and innkeeper Septimus Bunkle in The Rebel Maid in 1922 and again in 1932.
He was a bailiff in Veronique, a thief in Ermine, a Puritan in Haddon Hall and Bald-Faced Sandy, Sheriff of Mendorino Bluff, in The Marriage Market.
In Miss Hook Of Holland in 1927, he played Simon Slinks, “a loafer by the Canal at Arndyke”!
