A THIRD edition is being produced of a book about the making of classic movie The Railway Children.

And author Jim Shipley is urging people who were involved as extras in the 1970 film, shot on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (K&WVR), to come forward.

The first two editions of The Making of the Railway Children have been hugely successful, between them selling nearly 8,000 copies.

Within 18 months of the initial book being published in 2010, marking the 40th anniversary of the movie, it had sold out.

Only about 300 copies remain of the second, award-winning edition.

“I am very pleased with the response it has received – the feedback has been excellent,” said Haworth man Mr Shipley, a volunteer and part-time admin worker on the K&WVR.

“The filming took place before my time here, but I was station master at Oakworth from virtually when I started on the railway in the mid 1980s until about 2000 and during that time got to know all about it and met many people who were involved.”

He says the third edition of the book, which is likely to be published early next year, will be bigger than its predecessors and contain a lot of new information.

“There will be lots more memories from within the railway, new and interesting photos, an interview with Chris Witty – who played Jim, the lad who broke his leg – and a piece about where the cast members are now,” said Mr Shipley, 63.

“I've also spoken to local people about their involvement in the film, but there must be plenty of others who were there, even if they were only filmed waving a handkerchief out of the carriage window!

"I'd love to hear people's memories and see any photos which could be used in the book."
