A FESTIVAL that saw fields across the Worth Valley transformed into artistic canvasses has been named cultural event of the year at a national awards ceremony.

The Yorkshire Festival 2014, which preceded the Yorkshire leg of the Grand Depart of the Tour de France, picked up a trophy at the UK Event Awards in London.

The arts and cultural festival was supported by Arts Council England, Yorkshire Water and local authorities, and ran for 100 days showcasing performances, exhibitions and events.

Locally it saw giant art installations in places like Oxenhope, Haworth and Stanbury.

It was the first cultural festival to accompany the Tour de France in its 111-year history.

An independent evaluation report found that the festival generated close to £10 million for the county’s economy and there are now plans in place for a biennial Yorkshire Festival of arts and culture from 2016.

Henrietta Duckworth, executive producer of Yorkshire Festival, said: "Winning this award is a tremendous achievement which confirms Yorkshire as a cultural powerhouse and recognises the explosion of creativity, participation and community spirit that people experienced in those exciting and inspirational 100 days."
