DRAWN by meticulously-groomed horses, these Keighley Gala tableaux had reached the Mansion House in Victoria Park at the end of the procession.
The title of the model building in the centre has been obscured by spectators, but the wagon on the left carries a fireman rescuing a child. This suggests that the date may be 1907, when the Keighley Fire Brigade put on this subject, which enjoyed "an excellent reception all along the line".
Tableaux had been introduced to Keighley in 1902, when local Sunday schools had celebrated Edward VII's coronation with a convoy of some 30 wagons representing scenes from British history. "Anyone who has ridden upright on an ordinary wagon," the Keighley News of the time pointed out, "will be able to appreciate the task of the riders."
Early tableaux tended to be topical. In 1910 the Parish Church Sunday School's Hero of Mafeking vied with Alice Street's "group of old age pensioners celebrating together their first pension day".
