THESE members of the Keighley National Savings League, formed during the war "to foster enthusiasm for savings in works and factories", were photographed in 1941 on the front lawn of The Knowle at Ingrow prior to presenting the cups on the table.

The Telegraph & Argus had sponsored a trophy for the best savings among "works with a preponderance of male labour", and the Keighley News another for those "with over 50 per cent of female labour". H Widdop and Co Ltd won the first and Fred Hurtley Ltd the second.

The group includes such prominent local figures as the Keighley Director of Education, the chief librarian and the manager of the York County Trustee Savings Bank. Chartered accountant Clifford A Harrison, seated behind the trophies, was to be awarded both the OBE and CBE for his work in National Savings.

Standing second from the right is Wyndham Rowland, editor of the Keighley News from 1906 to 1950, nursing his newspaper through two world wars. An "editor in the old tradition" and a respected local voice, he never used a typewriter but prepared all his copy by hand.
