TWO West Yorkshire buses embark on a cautious descent of Haworth Main Street. The ‘Private’ destination board suggests that the photograph may date from 1938, when members of the National Omnibus Society paid a visit to experience an even tighter route through Braithwaite shortly before the opening of its by-pass. Haworth’s own Main Street by-pass was to come in 1974.

Needless to say, most traditional roads were never intended to cope with modern traffic. In 1920 Keighley had been the first local authority to seek a ten-miles-per-hour speed limit in its main thoroughfares, but its application was turned down by the Ministry of Transport.

Notice on the left the motorbike and sidecar, once a familiar sight.

The photograph has been supplied by Mr Ian Brierley, of Bridgehouse Lane, Haworth.
