BACK in the days when dinner meant a main meal at mid-day and employers allowed their workers enough time off to eat it, this Ping Hong Chinese cafe in College Street, Keighley, did a brisk trade in decent food at reasonable prices. This is an era when foreign menus were still considered rather exotic.
Alas, in 1966 a polite notice appeared in the window, apologising for being closed the following week "in order to allow demolition to take place"!
The Ping Hong was about to fall victim to a drastic town-centre clearance in preparation for the Airedale Centre.
Also lost was another popular College Street eating place in the shape of Moseley's fish and chip cafe, which had served as a local institution since 1937.
