REGARDING the story – Tougher voter ID rules welcomed (Keighley News, December 29) – there are some points I would like to raise on this proposed notion, which will exclude more voters than it includes.
Many older people who live in sheltered accommodation don’t fill out the form to be added to the electoral list. They often don’t go out at all. They have no passports, do not drive – so have no driving licence – and would not have any photo ID.
Many people who are sick cannot drive for health reasons, so they will not have driving licences. They possibly are like me and unable to fly as well, so having a passport becomes an expense to be cut.
Plus, there is another whole set of people who will be not included – women fleeing domestic violence do not give out their address or new ID, except to benefits and medical people. The minute you register on anything else, you are found. These women don’t have passports, or driving licences, having been kept in a life of abuse. They are not going to fill out the electoral form. Also, they will be living in hostels, so won’t have utility bills.
And how do they intend to prove a passport or driving licence is not fake at the voting halls?
