I REFER to Martin Walker’s letter – Ignoring cheap shots (Keighley News, March 2) – and would like to point out I was not writing on behalf of AVAI (Aire Valley Against Incineration).
I was writing as a concerned resident of Stockbridge. They were entirely my own views, but views that are being taken up by more and more people.
I was also not aware Mr Walker was standing as a councillor, although this explains why he had been more aware of the proposed incinerator plans than many other people.
My congratulations go to Mr Walker. I am pleased that, as a councillor, he “promises to represent all shades of opinion”, a quality that sadly many councillors appear to lose as soon as they are elected. Neither did I know his wife was a former town mayor, and I am truly sorry she suffered through unpleasant remarks on Facebook, but the fact remains it is a useful tool for ‘getting the word out’. I never disputed that the Keighley News is the best and most informative paper. I buy, and read, it every week – but not everybody does.
I was not making a “cheap shot” about where Mr Walker lives, either. It was a tongue-in-cheek remark to point out it is unfair to criticise ‘NIMBYs’ unless you are in the same situation. I also fail to see the relevance of the rest of the paragraph.
Regarding the phrase “bully boy tactics”, I hope Mr Walker is not accusing little old me of being a bully. I have never bullied anyone in my entire life (my husband, however, may disagree with that comment!).
