WITH every face and attitude a study, these 12 apprentice warp-dressers were photographed at Cowling some time before the Great War.
Clogs predominate and caps are the norm, apart from the wag in the middle, who has borrowed a boss’s hat!
The group was supplied many years ago by the Sutton-in-Craven local historian, the late Doris Riley, who could name them all.
On the back row (from left to right) are John Rushton, George Ion, Herbert Rushton, Harry Wilkinson, Maurice Benson, Willie Rushton and Jimmy Emmott.
Front row are Norman Binns, Peter Berry, Tom Rishworth, Harry Shuttleworth and Frank Grundell.
The three Rushtons were Miss Riley’s uncles, three of the 11 children of Thomas and Elizabeth Rushton, of Town End Farm, Ickornshaw.
All subsequently farmed at Cowling – John at Cowlaughton Farm, Herbert at Sandyforth Farm and William at Cowling Hill.
