SENIOR students and staff from South Craven School will head to the African country of Ghana at the start of the summer holidays.

Nine students from year 12 accompanied by two teachers will be travelling as part of a project that has been two years in the planning.

A South Craven School spokesman explained: "It won't exactly be a holiday, but it will be an experience!

"Five years into our partnership with a school in Ghana, the trip is the second of its kind to be organised by teachers Jonny Lonsdale and Vanessa Themistocleous in conjunction with Partner Schools Worldwide.

"Our students have been fundraising for their fares and are excited about the adventure. They will be visiting Elmina Methodist School.

"Elmina is a fishing village on the coast of Ghana and was a centre for the slave trade centuries ago, so the history of the area will be fascinating.

"As guests of the school, our students have successfully raised enough money to help it build a canteen building.

"They'll also experience cultural exchanges with the Ghanaian students, and will visit a slave castle, go on a treetop walk in the forest and tour the local town.

"South Craven School is very grateful to all in the community who've helped with the fundraising events and donated raffle prizes.

"Many businesses and clubs have made significant contributions. Particular thanks go to Panels Direct, High Adventure, 22 The Square, Steeton FC and Silsden AFC.

"Thanks also to Adam Greenwood, a representative of St James Place Wealth Management, who donated £500."
