THE CITY of London School for Girls, complete with teachers, was evacuated to Keighley – deemed “reasonably far from air raids and other disturbances” – at the end of October in 1940, taking over part of the Junior Technical School in Hartington Street and sharing the Girls’ Grammar School playing fields.
The City of London School was a high-class establishment. Notable among his pupils were Clare Rayner and Susan Shaw, future agony aunt and film star respectively.
The girls brought a distinctive flavour to the town, with their maroon blazers, pinafore dresses, lisle stockings, Panama hats in summer and velours in winter.
Here are some of the London girls at a Christmas party in 1940, together with boys from the Junior Technical School.
