A BOOK about the experiences of Oxenhope men and women during the First World War is generating funds for a hospice in the village.

The book, Oxenhope in the Great War, has raised over £4,500 in 18 months for Manorlands.

Norma Mackrell – who wrote the book, with a contribution from Catherine Snape – has handed over the latest cheque, for £530.

The publication features 400 photographs and includes details of life on the home front in Oxenhope during the war, and the impact caused by at least 370 village men being called away to fight.

Fifty-four men never returned.

Military records, contemporary newspaper reports, family stories and letters were used as part of the research.

Hayley Ibbotson, senior community fundraiser at the Sue Ryder hospice, said: "We're so grateful to continue to be benefitting from the proceeds of the book, which has proven to be very popular.

"This donation will help us to be there for patients and their families at a time when they really need us, which we simply wouldn't be able to do without the kindness of the local community raising funds to support us.

"I'd like to thank Norma and Catherine for all their commitment and everyone who has bought a copy of the book."
