South African teenager Bridgette Mtola wouldn't open her results envelope with fellow students of Greenhead High School.

She wanted to open it at home as a tribute to her mother who had supported her studies since they came to Keighley.

Bridgette, 16, has attended Greenhead since moving to England two years ago from Cape Town.

She said: "I've been told I've done well and I should be proud of myself. I know my mother will be proud.

"I struggled at first because it's a very different education system but the teachers were quite supportive."

Joshua Leighton, 16, from Riddlesden, also triumphed against adversity, gaining six grade-Cs or above.

Joshua, who has a rare bone disease, has to attend school in a wheelchair and had to miss many lessons.

School head Tricia McCarthy paid tribute both to Joshua's hard work and the support of his friends.

Those friends, 16-year-olds Rob Byers and Matthew Lilley, were delighted with their exam successes.

Rob was Greenhead's highest-scoring student this year with four A*s, two As and five Bs.

Matthew was surprised to gain 13 GCSEs, including five As, and planned to enrol in the sixth form that day.

Imran Khan, 16, was pleased to have gained B and D grades in exams after missing one year of his GCSE school studies.

He has left Greenhead and is now a trainee chef, as well as regularly working as a catalogue model and TV extra.

Imran's friends, Shujah Qureshi - who passed 11 exams - and Kishan Singh, both said they did as well as they expected.

Squealing with delight at their results were Kalsoom Din, Alia Hussain, Nadia Hanif, Maria Khalin and Sophia Sharif.

The Keighley girls excitedly compared grades, with Nadia particularly pleased to have passed English.

Alia, who gained an A* for citizenship, said she had done better than she expected.

Friends Arooj Mahmood, from Utley, and Georgina Baldwin, from Shann Park, achieved better than they expected and planned to join the sixth form.

Salma Kauser gained one A*, six As and three Bs and said: "I did excellently. I put a lot of work into it."

KEY: The first figure indicates the number of A-C passes gained and the second figure the number of passes at grades below that.
