A KEIGHLEY mosque will host an open day early next month.

The Madinah Mosque, in Spencer Street, Highfield, is participating in the Visit My Mosque Day initiative.

People are invited to visit the building and meet some of the Muslims who worship there between 10am and 3pm on Sunday March 3.

There will be talks and question and answer sessions led by sheikh Idris Watts at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

The day will feature tours of the mosque, an exhibition on Islam, henna painting, calligraphy demonstrations and a free meal.

Visitors will also have a chance to watch prayers taking place at 1pm.

Abid Hussain, who is on the mosque committee, said the building had not been suitable for an open day last year as it was in the midst of a major renovation programme, which has now been completed.

"We've had new classrooms and a mezzanine floor put in," he explained. "The mosque has been here for more than 18 years so it had needed some updating."

Visit My Mosque day is a national scheme involving the Muslim Council of Britain. It encourages mosques across the UK to hold open days to welcome people from all faiths and none to help build bridges between communities.
