PRIVATE landlords and letting agents in Keighley are being warned to stick to the law over smoke alarms.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says detectors must be installed on every storey of a rented property.

And landlords are required to ensure alarms are in working order at the start of each new tenancy.

The brigade has produced a video – Let it, don’t forget it – to help get the message across.

The move comes on the third anniversary of the deaths of two young twins in a West Yorkshire fire.

A letting agent was subsequently jailed for failing to fit smoke alarms in the house.

“Three years on from the boys’ loss we want to remind landlords and letting agencies of their responsibilities to install smoke alarms on every storey of their rented properties – and carbon monoxide detectors in any room containing a solid fuel burning appliance,” said deputy chief fire officer, Dave Walton.

“Do not take the risk with people’s lives and don’t think that a fire ‘will never happen’ – it could well.

“If you are a private-sector landlord or letting agent, then treat your responsibilities seriously and take heed of this warning.”
