SAINSBURY'S in Keighley has operated one-way 'lanes' within its car park for some time now, yet drivers regularly ignore the very clear markings on the road and large pole-mounted 'No Entry' signs – comments I have received in the past have included "he's not from round here" and "you'll get used to it".

On Valentine's Day, a lady drove down the wrong lane, forcing another car coming the right way to stop.

When I pointed this out, she shouted something through the driver's window at me, then parked up elsewhere.

Inside the store, when I spoke to her, she said she had been talking to her mum on a hands-free phone.

I was about to say that, as a member of Keighley Town Council's watch & transport committee, I was worried she was not paying attention.

She said she had shouted "sorry" (while still driving the wrong way and talking to her mum!).

As I left, I heard her mutter "town councillor or not", at which point I walked away, to avoid escalating the problem.

Operation Steerside – which targets drink or drug drivers, and those wearing no seatbelt, speeding or using a hand-held mobile phone – has proved very successful, and is partly funded each year by the watch & transport committee.

On a lesser level – as a concerned member of the public rather than a local councillor – can I make the rather obvious point that if she ignored the signs in the car park and was not fully concentrating on her driving, her 'excuse' would not have cut much ice if she had driven up the recently-converted one-way Albert Street.
