KEIGHLEY’S Big Local partnership awarded funding to the Riddlesden Toad Patrollers.
A £250 grant will be used to make gathering migrating toads and other amphibians as safe as possible for volunteers after dark.
Big Local co-ordinator Shaun O’Hare said: “We hope the funding will help patrollers continue to work together and carry out their marvellous work.”
During early spring the group helps toads stirring from hibernation reach their breeding grounds.
A spokesman explained: “Riddlesden toads walk towards the canal, crossing busy roads in the dark to reach their breeding location. Unfortunately many get squashed by cars.
“This is where we help. Local people with buckets and torches collect any toads they find and help them over the road.
“Some of Big Local’s funding will provide night visibility gilets and reflective tape for patrollers.”
Sue Patchett, Riddlesden Toad Patrol co-ordinator, said: “In 2018 we rescued 1,123 toads, 54 frogs and 29 newts. An all-time record.” She asked motorists to be aware that toads might be on the move after dark.
Depending on the weather, amphibians are most likely to be making their journeys between early March to mid April. People who can help Riddlesden Toad Patrollers can leave a message on 01535 669976 and someone will ring back.
