BELLYDANCERS from Keighley are currently staging an exhibition about their art form.

Members of the bellydance group Northwind Tribal devised the exhibition which has been displayed on recent weekends at Keighley Creative Space.

The art gallery and studio in Hanover Street, near the bus station, will host the final day of the exhibition on April 20 from 11am-3pm.

Northwind Tribal, who perform regularly around the West Yorkshire and East Lancashire area, are known for their interesting dances and colourful, unusual costumes.

Group spokesman Chris Ogden said: “Tribal Bellydance is a modern style of dance fusing various elements of Middle Eastern, African, Indian and Gypsy dance.

“It was created in the USA in the 1970s and is now popular throughout the world.”

NorthWind began at Oakbank School, Keighley, in 2001 and has grown from a small core to a large group of dancers who attend regular classes in Keighley, Sowerby Bridge and Nelson.

Chris said: “From the beginning we have danced at public and private events including International Women’s Day, Olympic Torch celebrations, SteamPunk weekends, Fairy Fests and other local charity events.”

“We were invited by Keighley Creative Space to have an exhibition charting who we are and what we do and, so we have gathered together photos, costumes, artwork and other things of interest.”

Northwind members have been giving informal performances and mini workshops during exhibition days.

A launch party on April 5 was attended by friends, family and supporters, and featured a dance show charting the group’s progress across the years.

The 22 dancers performing at the launch were drawn from the various classes in different towns.

Admission to the exhibition is free, and they will be dance displays throughout the day.
