PEOPLE across the district are being urged to take extra care when near water.

The Royal Life Saving Society UK has issued advice after recent incidents on waterways across the country claimed at least three lives.

The society warns that while taking a dip during warm weather may be tempting, it can also pose serious dangers.

“When you’re out and about near water with friends or family there are always plenty of chances to have fun – especially when it’s hot and sunny,” said a spokesman.

“But whether you’re on the beach, by a canal or at the river, different bodies of water can hide dangers.

“It’s worth remembering that however warm the weather might be, UK waters are still dangerously cold.”

The society, in partnership with the RNLI, has produced a water safety code.

Advice includes: Stop and think – look for the dangers, and always read signs

* Swim where there is a lifeguard and never swim alone – always go with friends or family

* In an emergency, call 999 or 112

* If you fall in, float or swim on your back. Throw something that floats to anyone who has fallen in the water.
