KEIGHLEY Asda workers and the town’s MP John Grogan joined a march in Leeds protesting at plans by the supermarket giant to change employees’ contract terms and conditions.
The demonstration was organised by the GMB union.
Mr Grogan said proposals included mandatory working on public holidays and more-flexible hours.
“Many on the march said they could not sign-up for complete flexibility in working hours because of caring responsibilities,” he added. “The company needs to show more respect to its hard-working workforce.”
But Asda says the changes will ensure everyone doing the same job is on matching terms and conditions and will increase take-home pay for over 100,000 employees.
A spokesman added: “The retail sector is undergoing significant change and it is important that we are able to keep pace with these changes.
“We fully understand colleagues have commitments outside of work and will not be asking them to constantly move the time they work, their days or departments.”
