KEIGHLEY-district students starting university this autumn should be alert to tax scams, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) warns.

Last year, more than 620,000 tax-related e-mail scams were reported – including many targeting students.

HMRC is writing to universities asking them to issue a warning.

Criminals use a range of methods to steal personal details, the most common being a fake tax payment from a seemingly-legitimate e-mail address. HMRC says it never sends e-mails or text messages informing people of tax rebates. Students receiving an e-mail purporting to be from HMRC should report it to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk.
