A SHORTAGE of volunteers could deprive Keighley families of invaluable support.

That’s the stark warning from a charity which helps families with young children through challenging times.

Home-Start’s trained volunteers spend around two hours a week in a family’s home, providing whatever support – practical or emotional – is needed.

But the organisation says some families in the Keighley area which desperately need help could miss out because there are insufficient volunteers.

Among those who benefits from the scheme is mum-of-three Rachel Barritt.

The 38-year-old – who has a painful, debilitating bone condition – says her volunteer has been a blessing.

“I don’t think you can understand the power of volunteering until you have benefitted from one yourself,” she said.

“If I was at a loose end and I could do something with my time and could offer someone a shoulder to cry on – and they needed a pair of hands – then I would do it.

“Giving back a little is such a good thing to do.

“Sometimes you can’t afford to support charities financially, but you could give your time.

“I would be a volunteer if I was able – the idea behind it is fabulous.

“I think people need to spread the word about Home-Start. It is such a valuable resource.

“Everyone struggles in some way when they have children and there are people who struggle that little bit more and need the free support that’s out there. It feels like it is overlooked.”

Kirsty Whitham, the Keighley family and volunteer co-ordinator for Home-Start Bradford District, says the role of volunteers can be extremely rewarding.

She added: “I am very lucky to work with the most amazing volunteers, who want to make a difference to the families they support. But there are many more families that we could help if we had more trained volunteers.

“Becoming a volunteer can also improve your own wellbeing and helps you develop and enhance skills that may lead to employment. Just a couple of hours a week could make a lifetime of difference for a family in need.”
