CHILDREN from across the Keighley area paid tribute to past generations during Remembrance events.

Many attended their villages’ Remembrance Sunday ceremonies or visited local war memorials during school time. And the Remembrance Sunday parade in Keighley was attended by at least nine schools.

Wilsden Primary School hosted a commemoration event on Armistice Day itself, Monday November 11, to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the First World War, and teach pupils about the importance of the day.

The event began with pupils and staff marching along Main Street towards the war memorial for a short service. Pupils were able to listen to an actor telling the story of a soldier, and took part in activities including a mock army camp in the school field.

Head teacher John Davison invited parents and the local community to join the children on the march.

He said: “History is a very emotive subject, and that includes learning about topics which students may find tough – including fear and danger – but we feel that’s an important part of a well-rounded education, and of life.

“We wanted our students learn about the importance of remembering the past and the people affected, as well as how to deal with similar challenges they may face in the real world.”

Oxenhope Primary School children attended a Remembrance service at the village’s St Mary’s Church, with pupil Eddie Fordham laying a wreath.

Children and staff from Parkside School and Cullingworth Primary School followed their annual tradition of gathering around the village war memorial on the Friday before Remembrance Sunday.

Children from Bridgehouse Nursery and Pre-school in Steeton made an act of remembrance at the village war memorial by laying a giant poppy they had made.
