THERE'S a last chance to see an exhibition of textile art at Cliffe Castle Museum as Thread Running Through ends on Sunday January 12.

The display features art by the group Textilia 3 which draws on Keighley's rich industrial history to explore the thread running through people's stories, landscapes and work.

A spokesman said: "The landscape in which we live, meet and work is a northern landscape largely shaped by cloth. Distinctive weavers' cottages line the canals and perch on hillsides, tall mill chimneys dominate the valleys.

"We meet at Cliffe Castle, a grand and richly furnished house created by the Butterfields, mill owners and merchants. Some of us have mill workers in our ancestry, weaving in our memories and in our blood."

Textilia 3 is a well-established group of 13 contemporary textile artists from the North of England who have exhibited widely in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria over the last 25 years.

Music at the Museum resumes its free concerts on January 26 with a performance by Keighley Ukulele Orchestra, a group of mixed ability ukulele enthusiasts, from beginners to seasoned players, who meet once a week for lessons at Keighley Musicians Centre.

The long-established Haworth Band, who regularly perform at galas, fetes and shows throughout the summer, will perform on February 23.

Bradford Festival Choral Society, established in 1856 and one of the oldest choirs in the North of England, will perform at Cliffe Castle Museum on March 23.

Performing at least four times a year, the society draws on an illustrious history that has included performing with famous conductors Edward Elgar, Charles Halle, Malcolm Sargent and Peter Maxwell Davies, composer John Rutter, and soloists Kathleen Ferrier and Peter Pears.

The society recently worked with composer Duncan Druce – known for his completion of the Mozart Requiem – and jazz sensation Will Todd, composer of the acclaimed Mass in Blue.

The Trouvere Medieval Minstrels will perform music of the high Middle Ages, the time of the crusades and courtly love, on May 17. Aires and Gracenotes, a trio of singers and a pianist, will perform on April 19, and Skipton community jazz band Dales Jam on June 14.

Responses to Art is the title of a 'pocket-sized' sketching workshop on April 2, led by Louise Garrett, a keen Urban Sketcher who enjoys sharing the deeply satisfying activity of drawing on location, capturing what she sees from direct observation.

Participants will be introduced to the small portable (A6) sketchbook as a way to encourage a regular sketching habit. They will learn how to draw standing up, and practice sketching and layout designs to create fast drawings 'on the go'.

Louise will share her sketchbooks, and through demonstrations and activities in and around the museum and grounds, people will become comfortable with tools and techniques to practice urban sketching anytime, anywhere.

The workshop costs £10 on the day, but people should call 01535 618231 to book a place.
