AN ELECTION for a new North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner to replace the current commissioner Julia Mulligan, who has come to the end of her term, will take place in May next year, heard Craven District Council’s Crime and Disorder Committee.

Councillor Carl Les, chairman of the North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Panel, told the online meeting that the Home Office had said that the election would take place in May, next year, although it might be by postal ballot only.

“Our understanding from the Home Office is that elections will go ahead. They may be the only elections going ahead in May, but the Home Office has said they definitely want these to go ahead, bearing in mind they have been delayed once.

“They may be an all-postal ballot, but that has has not been decided yet,” he said.

Earlier, Cllr Les had paid tribute to the outgoing commissioner, Mrs Mulligan, for her work in the field of domestic violence.

Responding to a question from Cllr Andy Brown about domestic violence incidents during the coronavirus pandemic, he said there had been an increase. He added that Mrs Mulligan had secured £500,000 from the Home Office in order to strengthen that part of the police force that dealt with such crimes.
