A CAMPAIGN has been launched to raise awareness about the greater health risks older residents across Leeds are facing due to COVID-19.

Health and care organisations across the area are working together to spread a positive message to those aged 60 and over about how they can stay safe and well over the winter.

The message comes as Leeds - including Aireborough, Horsforth and parts of Wharfedale - remains under the highest, Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions: and ahead of a five day relaxation of the rules over the Christmas period.

The local NHS, alongside Leeds City Council and community and voluntary sector groups, is encouraging people to stay connected safely over the coming months and offering advice to employers and employees about how colleagues and customers can be protected.

Clinical Chair for Leeds NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, Dr Jason Broch, said: “We are acting on the latest information that informs us that people aged 60 and over are more at risk of contracting COVID-19 and experiencing serious complications. Sadly, as people move beyond the age of 60, the risk is higher.

“As clinicians we want to ensure we keep all our residents and communities safe and focussing on the most vulnerable groups is our priority. By encouraging people to minimise contact, stay active safely, and signpost people to resources that can help them stay connected to loved ones and friends remotely, we aim to give over 60s the best possible advice for staying well.

“It is important that people, especially those aged over 60, know they can still continue to go about their daily lives without putting themselves at risk.”

The campaign also stresses how important staying active is to maintain physical and mental wellbeing, and is recommending people should:

*Reduce the amount of time they spend sitting, for example by taking regular walk breaks

*Undertake at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, which can be broken into 30 minute chunks

*Take up activities such as brisk walking or dancing

Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adults at Leeds City Council, Councillor Rebecca Charlwood, added: “Leeds is an Age Proud and Age Friendly city and it is a priority that we ensure our residents aged 60 and over are offered the best possible advice.

“By working with the NHS and Third Sector organisations we will offer practical advice on staying COVID-19 safe, as well as ensuring people can make the most of new and existing resources.

“This campaign will offer guidance, support and advice and help to enable over 60s to stay in-touch, via technology, and active - indoors and out.” For more details visit www.takecareleeds.co.uk.
